What to Expect on Sunday Mornings

If you decide to join us on a Sunday morning, when you arrive, you will find a parking lot behind the church, off of Dickinson Street. There are a few spots on Washington Street along the front of the building. When you enter into the building through the double glass doors off of the parking lot, you will turn right - all of the classrooms and the sanctuary are on that side of the building. You will also find an accessibility ramp at this entrance. You can find a couple of adult Sunday School classes that meet at 9:30 am - one class meets in the Library (you will see signs pointing the way) and one class meets in Room 107, which is down the hall on the right. Kid's Sunday School is a little further down the hall on the right, and the nursery is down the hall on the left. The nursery is available for children ages 0-4 beginning at 9:30 am.

If you join us for worship, the service begins at 10:45 am. We tend toward more "traditional" staples in worship: organ music, robed choir and clergy, written prayers spoken together, and the celebration of Holy Communion every week. If your preferred style of worship is with a praise band and contemporary songs, you may find this style of worship foreign - but you will find that the Spirit moves within and through long-time practices of the Church and God can and does indeed speak to us in surprising ways. You will find people from all walks of life and all ages in our worship service. Wear whatever you'd like! You'll find folks in t-shirts and jeans, suits and ties, and everything in between! You will also find the "Prayground," a specially designed area of the sanctuary with kids in mind - a space where they can draw, read, play, and get their wiggles out, all while remaining a part of the worship service.

When we celebrate Holy Communion, we recognize that the table belongs to Christ and Christ invites all to his table. If you are not familiar with the practice of Holy Communion, during Communion, we remember the story of the Last Supper, we ask the Holy Spirit to be present with us and through this shared "meal", and we share in the bread and the cup - in our setting, we use bread and grape juice (and we have gluten free crackers available as well). When you come forward, you will receive a piece of bread and then may share in the cup in one of two ways: dipping the bread into the chalice, or receiving a small cup of grape juice. In the United Methodist Church, we practice the open table, which means you do not need to be a member of Saint Marks, a United Methodist, or even a baptized Christian to receive Communion. You don't even need to be a Christian at all - all you need is a desire to come. We believe that Christ meets us at the table and the Spirit is present and working in us through this shared meal. It is more than just a remembrance.

After worship, we have fellowship time with coffee and other refreshments in the New Room, which is right across the hall from the sanctuary. We hope you'll stay and connect with others in our community!
